Philmont Conference - Celebrating 25 years of the MCCS Ministry

MCCS Prepares for Philmont 2011

Thanks to the faithful attendance of Church of Christ Scouters to Philmont in recent years, MCCS has been granted the opportunity to conduct it's own seminar at Philmont 2011: "Scouting in the Church of Christ."

Make plans to celebrate the 25th anniversary of MCCS by attending the Philmont Training Center conference “Scouting in the Church of Christ” July 10 – 16, 2011.

For further information on prices and enrollment, contact MCCS and let us know you are interested. You are encouraged to go to can get more information on how to register and learn more about the conferences, museums, facilities, etc from the Philmont Training Center’s website. Kent Barnett, MCCS Executive Director, said he hopes the 2011 seminar can, "improve relations between churches and Scouting, and maybe result in more church-chartered Scouting units."

There will also be opportunities for worship and singing, Barnett said, and, "obviously, we'll have plenty of fellowship. It's our goal to have at least 40 attendees for the conference plus family members attend this fun week."

For those family members not attending the seminar, Philmont offers various staffed activities for the entire family. Youths 14 - 21 whose parent attends Philmont 2011 will also be guaranteed a spot a Mountain Trek, at an additional cost.

Philmont Training Center (PTC) is nestled in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of northeastern New Mexico. Rich in history and natural beauty, the PTC offers exciting, educational experiences for the entire family.

Conference schedules permit ample time for family activities in the evenings. The participants will have Wednesday off to do Philmont activities such as hikes, horseback rides, handicraft, museum tours, shop the trading post or drive to nearby mountain towns such as Red River, Eagle’s Nest and Taos.

There are staff-led programs for all ages during the day while the participant is in the conference training. Families eat three meals a day together in the dining hall. Spouses are kept busy with tours, hikes, crafts and activities – as many or as few as they chose to attend.

Conference participants will cover many topics during the week such as, how to develop relationships with local congregations to promote a Scouting ministry and to encourage youth to utilize and earn the Servant Leadership religious awards.

Participants for the conference must be registered in Boy Scouts of America. The other family members are not required to be registered in Scouting. Go to www.myscouting.org and register under the Events link. You must have a B.S.A. membership number. The number is on your membership card or call your local council to obtain it.

Our History and Involvement with the Philmont Training Center

John Clardy (deceased), Jim Swafford (deceased), Gene Linder, Glen Johnson, Bobbie Lee Wolfe, Charlie Marler, Don McClaugherty and Ralph Wallace were the first MCCS members to attend Philmont in 1988

In June of 1988, eight Scout leaders attended the Philmont Training Center's Scouting in the Church's Ministry conference near Cimarron, New Mexico. The seventh of such conferences took place July 16-22, 2006. To date, about 200 MCCS adult leaders have taken advantage of this training.

MCCS has had a presence at the "Relationships Week" conference on every even year since 1994.

The "Scouting in the Church's Ministry" conference equips church leaders and Scouters to use Scouting as a resource in their ministry to children, youth and families. Emphasis will be given to outreach, leadership development and intergenerational activities.

Anyone involved with church youth is encouraged to attend. Attendees find fun and fellowship with other Christian Scouters in the beauty of some of the most majestic country in God's creation. In addition to the conference, there are activities for the rest of the family from childcare for the very young, to week-long guided mountain treks for teens and activities catering to adults of all ages.
